Ceric Ammonium Sulphate Dihydrate, also known as ammonium cerium(IV) sulphate dihydrate, is a cerium(IV) reagent used in redox analysis and selected organic oxidations.

Identity & general properties

  • Product Form : Ceric Ammonium Sulphate Dihydrate
  • CAS Number : 10378-47-9
  • Chemical Formula : (NH₄)₄[Ce(SO₄)₄]·2H₂O
  • Molecular Weight : Approx. 632.55 g/mol
  • Cerium Oxidation State : Cerium(IV)
  • Appearance : Yellow to yellow-orange crystalline solid
  • Solution Behaviour : Hydrolysis can occur in water; use the acidic medium specified by the analytical or reaction method

Reference data only — this identity applies to the dihydrate only. These values are not a batch COA or a guaranteed sales specification.

Applications

  • Cerimetric analysis — preparation of standardized cerium(IV) titrants for validated redox methods, including certain iron(II) assays.
  • Organic synthesis — an oxidizing reagent for selected aromatic oxidations and quinone-forming transformations; suitability depends on the substrate and reaction conditions.
  • Polymer research — reported as an initiator in selected radical polymerisation systems, including pectin/PEGMA hydrogel research (a research application, not a universal process claim).

Hydrolysis can occur in water. Use the acid medium, standardisation and storage requirements specified by the validated method — weighing the solid alone does not establish a certified titrant concentration. Ceric Ammonium Sulphate is not the same as ceric ammonium nitrate or ceric sulphate; do not substitute between them without checking chemical identity, assay basis and method suitability.

Handling & Storage

Oxidizing reagent. Avoid skin and eye contact and inhalation of dust. Use suitable ventilation, gloves and eye protection. Store tightly closed in a cool, dry, ventilated area; prevent contamination. Follow the supplied SDS for incompatibilities, disposal and transport requirements — this information is not an SDS and does not establish pharmaceutical or electronic grade.
