Description

Cerium Oxide

For polishing, catalysis & advanced materials. Application suitability is grade-dependent — chemical identity alone does not establish polishing performance.

Cerium Oxide (CeO₂), also known as ceria or cerium dioxide, is a rare-earth oxide used in glass-polishing systems, catalyst formulations and materials development. Its redox and oxygen-storage behaviour supports a range of catalytic applications. Select the grade according to your process requirements.

Identity & reference properties

  • Chemical Name : Cerium(IV) oxide / cerium dioxide / ceria
  • Chemical Formula : CeO₂
  • CAS Number : 1306-38-3
  • Molecular Weight : 172.11 g/mol
  • Typical Appearance : Pale yellow or cream powder; grade-dependent
  • Water Solubility : Insoluble; aqueous formulations are dispersions
  • Grade / Particle Size / Packing : To be confirmed against the approved specification

Reference properties only — appearance can vary with grade and processing. No purity, particle-size distribution or polishing-performance specification has been assigned to this draft.

Applications

  • Glass and optical polishing — used in suitable polishing compounds and slurry systems; surface finish depends on the glass, particle distribution and the complete process.
  • Catalysis — a component or support in ceria-based catalyst systems, valued for redox and oxygen-storage behaviour; validate the finished formulation for the intended reaction.
  • Advanced materials — used in ceramic and ceria-based energy-material research, including formulated or doped systems; suitability depends on composition and processing.

These are established application areas, not performance guarantees for an unqualified Sontara grade. General cerium oxide powder is not automatically a finished polishing blend or ready-to-use catalyst. Cerium oxide is water-insoluble; a water-based formulation is a suspension or slurry, not a true solution. No nano-size or scratch-free claim is implied — particle size must be confirmed by supporting measurements and an approved specification.

Handling & Storage

Avoid generating or inhaling dust and prevent eye/skin contact. Use suitable ventilation, gloves, protective clothing and safety goggles. Keep tightly closed in a cool, dry, ventilated place, away from incompatible materials. Prevent release to drains. Follow the current product SDS and workplace exposure assessment for full controls, first aid, disposal and transport — the third-party reference SDS does not replace the SDS for the supplied grade.

For professional chemical use. Application suitability is grade-dependent. No food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, drinking-water or finished catalyst/polishing-product approval is implied.
